Movies she was involved: look at her impressive list
While looking for some sad mood songs, I stumbled upon this amazing fan video: a list of Alka Yagnik's songs.
To me, Alka Yagnik is one of the most prominent playback singers I've encountered during my little Bollywood fangirl spree [which took about 4 years and on and off later on; and of course I have a lot of other favorites myself XDD]. Back when Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a big hit, her singing caught me in a web [about 90% of the singing in the movie she was paired with Udit Narayan]. I thought she was a goddess! Her voice, whenever she goes very high, the way she emphasizes her vowels and drags them in several intonations... *drowns in the feels for her voice* Alka is classically trained--which means it is expected of her to do improvisations and make use of intonations that sound different for those who are used to Western American music.
For those who aren't used to Bollywood movies and anything related--about 99% of their movie industry consists of singing/dancing and movies. The Hindi love movies which is why they release a lot of movies in one year, more than Hollywood self.
Back to Alka, so~~ I remember swooning whenever I kept encountering her name in the credits in the Bollywood movies I'd happened to watch: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal ho naa ho, Baazigar, Dil kya kare, Karan Arjun, Yes Boss, Baadshah, Pardes, Ishq, Hum dil de chuke sanam, Hum saath saath hain, Taal, Kaho naa... Pyaar hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam...
omg the list is too long to remember.
Her career began quite early on and till this day she's still singing for movies. That's like about 30 years or so.
Go Alka ji~!
EDIT: Found a concert where she sings live. You can definitely hear how she plays with the vowels.
AND OMG I TOTALLY FORGOT SHE HAD VISITED MY COUNTRY BEFORE. HERE'S A CONCERT VERSION. THAT SOUND IS DEFINITELY SURINAME'S LIVE BAND:
